Automated driving technologies are reshaping the automotive landscape, creating a pressing need for training programmes to address the ensuing challenges for drivers. Previous mental model-focused trainings were successful shaping knowledge and attitudes but did not enhance driving performance. Therefore, this study explores a two-stage approach, combining mental model and gaze behaviour training to improve knowledge, attitudes, and driving performance during takeovers. In a longitudinal study (N = 31) across two sessions conducted in a driving simulator, mental model training improved knowledge and acceptance but had no effect on intention to use or trust. Gaze training enhanced safety during complex takeovers but did not alter takeover speed. Scanpath analysis highlighted positive changes in gaze behaviour due to the training. Combining mental model building with gaze behaviour training proves an effective strategy for preparing drivers to handle complex takeover situations, indicating that future training programmes should be built on this two-stage concept.
